UniFi USG – VPN L2TP: Ignoring request to authentication address * port 1812 from unknown client

Problem

Can not establish connection to UniFi VPN with L2TP

Detail

ssh to the USG

sudo tail -f /var/log/freeradius/radius.log

...

Mon Jan 4 08:21:35 2021 : Error: Ignoring request to authentication address * port 1812 from unknown client port 37109

...

Environment

  • USG-3P
  • UniFi Controller

Solution

After a long try and error, search and fail and so on I found a little strange but working solution.

  1. Open the Radius Server settings page on the UniFi Controller
  2. Enable the Firefox development tools
  3. Search for the ID “radiusServerConfigureWholeNetwork”
  4. Replace “disable” with “enable” for the input
  5. Now you can enable and save the settings
  6. After the provisioning is done you can use your VPN

Had the exact same error message, and the solution did the trick. Thanks for sharing!

  2. Same problem here… Thanks for this! Looking at the forums it seems to have been an issue for a while. I wish UBNT would do something about it!

  3. I got the same issue with the VPN L2TP setup.
    The log in the router:
… Error: Ignoring request to authentication address * port 1812 from unknown client …
    I’m have the version 6.2.25 (Build: atag_6.2.25_15316).

I enable it in the “HTML” as you had done it and I got it to work.
    … Auth: Login OK: …

    Thanks to you!
